Alina had a tough time through her journey to success in the journalism industry. Alina’s father having worked in the pharmaceutical industry, wanted her daughter to follow his steps and study pharmacy but that wasn’t Alina’s call. Even after she told her parents about her love for journalism, they were in disbelief. Mayo’s father went against it telling her that she will starve to death and it would be hard for her since she was shy. Conversely, Mayo worked hard towards her dreams and it really worked well for her.
Alina graduated with a degree in broadcast journalism in 1981 from the University of Miami College of Arts and Science. While in UM, Mayo was chosen by the executive producer of The Raph Renick Reportz, Fred Mooke, to perform in a series “The Young Journalists.” Her love for the camera influenced greatly her getting her first job as a reporter for Channel 23 for Spanish two months after she graduated from MU. Former director of Channel 23, Gustavo Godoy described her as a professional lady full of integrity. Azze has worked for over 35 years in the broadcasting industry and has served as an icon of Univision Channel 23 for a while.

Alina was currently co-hosting at 6 p.m as the newscaster of Noticians 23 where she has been working since 1991. On Wednesday 6 p.m. announcement was made by el Nuevo Herald who confirmed the layoff. Mayo was laid off together with other Univision Radio stars like Father Alberto Cutié, José Alfonso Almora, and Pepe Forte. However, she told el Nuevo Herald that her layoff was unpredicted and despite being her first time in 40years being unemployed she has made peace with it and that her time to say goodbye has come. Mayo claimed to have done her part appreciating the trust the public had in her.
